My Interview w/Karyn White and The Soul Train Awards Controversy

In 2012, I had the pleasure to interview R&B singer, Karyn White! The article, which I titled, "Karyn White: The Rebirth", was selected to appear on the cover of the magazine and was published in digital and print! It was such an honor to interview her and I found her to be such a sweet person who just wanted to get back to doing what she loves...her music! At the time, Karyn was just getting back into the music scene as an independent artist and had released her new album, "Carpe Diem", which she released on her own label. During the interview, she explained how she was passed over by Babyface and others in the industry when she decided to start a family.

I saw the video shared by the artist regarding her take on the "Superwoman" song controversy surrounding her absence on the 2015 Soul Train Awards. I have to say that I agree with everything she said! I am not surprised that she was once again overlooked to sing the song during the awards ceremony, which was sung instead by Fantasia as a tribute to Babyface. Although he did write the song, I agree that Karyn made it a hit with her beautiful soulful voice! In her true classy fashion, she gave props to the young artist, but insists that she wasn't even contacted or considered for the project. Despite the apparent shade, Karyn is and will always be one of best R&B singers of all time!

"Broken"

Why me, Lord?...She would ask herself as the bloody tears rolled down the side of her face...How could someone who claimed to love her, hate her so much she wondered...She would yell, but no one ever answered...There was no one else to hear her wolf's cry...

Flashbacks of his fist striking her head over and over and over again...Memories of being choked, stomped and beat as often as he liked...It was like a death sentence and she just wanted to die!...

She was broken! Not only physically, but spiritually...She gave in to his controls and became a prisoner in her own home...She felt trapped in a nightmare...Whenever she would run away, he would always find her...She would return out of fear...Loosing all faith of the life she once dreamed...

Over the years, she had become numb...Soon there were no more tears to cry...It was like a bad love song...One that played over and over again in her head...There was no happily ever after...She knew there was no escape...Her brokenness was a dark shadow that followed her wherever she went...No matter how hard she tried, she knew the broken pieces of her life would never be whole again...

"Lost & Found Love"

They were young and madly in love! A chance encounter 25 years prior would be the start of a beautiful union...One that was full of passion and promise! Not a day went by they didn't see each other...Their love was so strong they were the envy of their peers...One could never imagine him without her...her without him...They were like peas and carrots. It was them against the world!


But to their dissmay, their romance was short-lived...Revelation of unresolved baggage and brokeness manifest...Running from her pain, one day she decided to move away...Leaving an empty hole where their love once was...Their feelings of passion and love were replaced with those of abandonment and tears. A love that was thought to last forever was gone. They kept in touch for a while, but soon they both moved on...

Until one day, after all those years, a love that was once lost was found again...It was as if the love was never lost...and time had stood still....Now they were both older and wiser...They never knew their journeys in life would lead them back to their love...The only thing that had changed is the people in their lives...But no one could stop the power of love...and theirs was a testament that lost love can be found!

"The Forbidden Love"

A connection that would last through weddings and through years...A forbidden love they both knew would never manifest...The type of love that only they knew...Not a day would go by that she didn't think of him. The love they shared was a drug and he was her fix! No matter how hard she tried to delete him from her life, she could never forget him and what they shared...

He loved her more than he could ever admit...And even more because she was one of the few who saw his true heart, but not enough to risk it all. They both had so much to lose. They knew a union would not only be selfish but like forbidden fruit....He tried hard to hide his feelings, but she wasn't fooled by his tough exterior. She knew it was only a persona he created. A shield to protect him against the elements of his world. Despite it all, he was still passionate and sweet. Whenever they would meet, their chemistry was so strong it was magical. Whenever they made love, the bond would grow even stronger. They would find solace in each other, holding on for dear life.

But somehow they always knew their forbidden love couldn't last for long...As time passed, they knew their season was over and it was time to move on...The times they shared together became less and less. She spent months in mourning, missing his voice and remembering the warmth of his touch. Thinking of what once was. She finally found the strength to go on with hopes that time would heal her wounds...Their connection on hold, but no matter the time apart or how many others in their lives, they know deep inside their love will always be.
